Packing tips for moving
Packing your belongings properly is an essential step in every moving process. When you move all your belongings to a new address, there are several things to consider.
Before you start packing, take some time to sort all your belongings and decide which items you want to keep, sell, donate, and throw away.
The right equipment can make the moving process much more efficient. Make sure you get all necessary packing materials and moving boxes well ahead of time.
Tips for packing different types of items:
- Pack paintings, mirrors, and other fragile items using cardboard or bubble wrap. Wrap crockery, porcelain, and ornaments in protective material before placing them in boxes. Pack ceiling lights using protective plastic or corrugated cardboard.
- Protect delicate furniture (e.g. sofas) with corrugated cardboard or plastic.
- Pack pillows, blankets, and clothes in large bin bags and tape the bags shut.
- Protect mattresses with bin bags or cardboard.
- Empty desk and dresser drawers before moving. Tape the drawers shut to prevent them from opening during the move. Pack loose and movable items in boxes.
- If possible, disassemble all large pieces of furniture (e.g. beds).
- Protect flowers and plants with a cloth or plastic bag.
- Clothes on hangers can be hung in the car (it is a good idea to protect them with bin bags, for example).
- When preparing to move a washing machine or other appliance, unplug the power cord and secure it to the side of the appliance with tape.
- It is always advisable to hire professional movers to move a piano.
