Moving tips

Trafipoint has compiled a checklist that will help you
make your move as efficient as possible.

One month before moving

Start preparing for the move well ahead of time. Set the moving date and determine how you will carry out the move: will you do it by yourself or do you need help? Obtain competitive offers from moving companies or order moving boxes. Get rid of any items you no longer need and go through your storage facilities (storage unit, attic, basement, etc.). Make sure all your service agreements are either terminated or transferred to your new address. If you have children, find out about kindergartens and schools in your new neighbourhood. Enroll your children in a new kindergarten and/or school.

Recommended number of movers:
1–2 rooms / 2–4 movers
3–4 rooms / 3–5 movers
More than 5 rooms / 4–7 movers

One week before moving

Notify all relevant parties of your new address, and submit a notification of change of address to the post office (Posti). Start packing your things: take down heavy mirrors, paintings, and wall-mounted furniture well ahead of time.

Moving day

Make sure the floors and surfaces of your old and new apartment are adequately protected during the move. Make sure your belongings are properly packed and that you have the right number of movers. If you have obtained a competitive offer from a moving company, you can let professionals handle all or part of the above-mentioned tasks.
Carry out the move-out cleaning and notify the new housing cooperative of your move.

Other things to keep in mind:
When you move out, hand over your keys to the property manager or owner. Make sure you haven’t lost your keys, otherwise the locks must by replaced, which can be expensive. Leave your contact information for the new tenant so they can forward any post sent to your old apartment to your new address. Notify the property manager or housing cooperative of your move.
